This is a transformation from vendor-specific solutions, where software and hardware are integrated, and interfaces to other systems are proprietary, to interoperable solutions, where software and hardware are separated and standardized, simplifying the solutions&#8217; ability to run in the cloud. This opens up for the use of standardized COTS-hardware also in the railway industry.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>The current solutions for railway signaling<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The backbone of safe and efficient railway operations lies in its signaling systems. Railway signaling systems control train movements, ensuring they travel safely and navigate the rail network without incidents. As trains are a vital component of global infrastructure\u2014both for cargo transport and public transit\u2014the reliance on advanced signaling systems to manage this signaling challenge is crucial.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The existing systems are based on vendor-specific hardware and software solutions that depend on each other from leading vendors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The challenges with vendor-specific solutions are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are not interoperable with other systems<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drives cost for system integration, upgrades, and maintenance<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It does not give control to the buyer but rather to the vendor<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Will lock in the customer with one vendor<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload alignnone wp-image-19963 size-full\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%27http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%27%20width%3D%272500%27%20height%3D%271262%27%20viewBox%3D%270%200%202500%201262%27%3E%3Crect%20width%3D%272500%27%20height%3D%271262%27%20fill-opacity%3D%220%22%2F%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E\" data-orig-src=\"https:\/\/www.prover.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/COTS4.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"2500\" height=\"1262\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><b>The transformation into open and interoperable solutions via COTS<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The market wants to move towards digital and interoperable solutions. The use of COTS software and hardware is an enabler of this. An example of this trend is the initiative driven by Indra and Amey, which was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.indracompany.com\/en\/noticia\/indra-amey-join-forces-transform-rail-industry-new-digital-interoperable-signalling-systems\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">announced in November 2023.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Prover solution&#8217;s foundation is to enable the separation of software and hardware. This is done by providing a software solution for developing Digital Twins of the complete Rail Control System and automating all steps from tendering, development, safety verification, and maintenance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The software solution runs on any hardware platform, including COTS platforms like:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HIMA<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schneider<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pilz<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2026<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This leads to significant benefits like:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lower costs and risks using digital twins<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reusability with open and standardized PLC languages, specifications, and interfaces<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Customers will gain more control of the solution<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maintainability and interoperability over the life cycle<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Signaling projects can be based on developing Digital Twins of the solution even before the tender phase.
